Jaunpur DM: A crusader in the garb of a bureaucrat

Seldom in the history of Indian bureaucracy has any IAS officer launched a crusade against ?ills? in the society. But this 2000 batch IAS officer of Uttar Pradesh cadre is all together a different material. Having already launched a fight against corruption, beginning from self, the young district magistrate of Jaunpur, Anurag Yadav, launched a campaign against ills in the society on Tuesday ignoring his official limitations.

Having already launched a fight against corruption, beginning from self, the young district magistrate of Jaunpur, Anurag Yadav, launched a campaign against ills in the society on Tuesday ignoring his official limitations.

Taking out a 12-km long cycle yatra from Karanja Kala block to Mulnapur village in the same district, the DM was accompanied by some other senior officers and locals all riding bicycles generating public awareness against ills.

According to Anurag, his agenda is to fight against six ills in the society — malnutrition, illiteracy, sex determination and fight for access to safe drinking water and clean environment, fight for implementation of rural employment guarantee scheme and effective implementation of Right to Information Act.

The DM riding the bicycle carried the message like `Padhna Hai Padhana Hai, Bharat Ko Sakshar Banana Hai’ (We have to educate ourselves and others so that India could become totally literate). Similarly, issues concerning the society were displayed in form of messages by the cyclists in the rally.

“I will be covering all the 21 blocks of Jaunpur in 21 days time on bicycle to generate awareness about ills plaguing the society and my own way of addressing such concerns,” the enthusiastic DM told Hindustan Times on Tuesday.

Elaborating on the campaign, Yadav said like how to deal with ‘My fight against malnutrition and hunger’, he was identifying the limited number of well-to-do families in all the blocks and villages to take care of the needy families in their respective villages voluntarily.

“I want to deal with these problems in my own way with the cooperation of the people which I am getting immensely,” Yadav explained. He disclosed that within a short period from now he was hopeful of naming the some villages in his district, which might have achieved cent percent literacy.

It may be mentioned that this young DM has created a history by launching a crusade against corruption also. He gets himself thoroughly checked before he enters his office and discloses the cash amount he carries and again at the time of leaving the office allows his purse to be checked.

This is his way of fighting corruption. When the DM did it, his juniors in the Collectorate and other offices followed suit so that no employee resorted to corrupt practices in the office. The increase in cash would certainly confirm corrupt practice by the officials. “The initiative is excellent but for how long this DM’s unique style of can fight against ills in the society is a million dollar question,” an observer said.
