cUmesh Kumar Singh, father of the Madhya Pradesh girl, Shipra Singh, told HT that Sahi and his daughter got engaged on February 2, 2007 in Chhattisgarh.

But after the Var Ki Ichchha — a ceremony where the bride’s parents and relatives present gifts to the groom — “he started dilly-dallying and eventually tied the knot with another girl whom he wanted to marry for past several years,” Singh said. The minister got married to Chhani, a girl from Uttar Pradesh, on December 12.

Singh, demanding the removal of the minister for “playing dirty games” with his daughter, claimed that Sahi had hatched the conspiracy in connivance with his nephew Prakash Singh.

However, Sahi’s father Hemendra Pratap Dehati and Prakash Singh refuted the charge, claiming they didn’t want to disclose the reasons for the decision, as it would affect the girl’s prospects of getting married in future.

Shipra Singh told HT that Sahi had initially demanded Rs 50 lakh in cash and a car, which were accepted. But later, he started demanding Rs 1 crore. Sahi has denied the charge. He said after the engagement, he had communicated his family’s decision of not marrying the girl. Sahi said the bride’s family did not match the social status of his family.

Meanwhile, although DSP of Sidhi, S.K. Barman, said no complaint against Sahi had yet been made, sources not wishing to be quoted said Shipra Singh’s father had lodged a complaint against Sahi in a Rewa court.
