The decision was taken on Tuesday after several rounds of meetings between Congress and JMM leaders both in Ranchi and Delhi during the past two days.

As part of its strategy for the next Lok Sabha elections, Congress agreed to be a junior partner of JMM in the coalition government that is likely to be backed by RJD and independents.

Quid pro quo, the Congress expects a lion’s share of the total 14 Lok Sabha seats in the state. A senior Congress leader said the JMM could concede 8-10 seats to his party in the 2014 polls.

In the 2009 general elections when two parties fought separately, Congress could win just one seat while JMM bagged two. This was in sharp contrast to 2004, when both parties fought in alliance and Congress won six seats while JMM got four.

The leader said JMM has also agreed in principle to name Hemant and not Shibu Soren for the chief minister’s post, another demand that created hurdles in the government formation.
