The agency nabbed chief commissioner PK Sharma on Tuesday on allegations that a junior colleague of his, I-T officer Shailendra Bhandari, had allegedly demanded and accepted an illegal gratification of Rs 15 lakh from an assessee for a favourable assessment, said a CBI source.

"The transaction occurred at a jewellery shop in Jodhpur where Bhandari took the bribe. Bhandari has claimed he took the money on behalf of the chief commissioner," said the source.

An alleged intermediary has also been arrested.

The agency is probing the role of other officers and will assess the arrested officials' assets to check if they are disproportionate to their known sources of income.
