Union information and broadcasting minister Arun Jaitley has called for an independent probe into the attack on two journalists of a leading English news channel who were allegedly attacked by a Samajwadi Party (SP) leader and MLA Nahid Hasan and his aides in Uttar Pradesh’s Shamli district where they had gone to report.

The two reporters were in Shamli to cover the incident in which an eight year-old boy was allegedly killed in celebratory firing by party workers.

Late on Monday night, Jaitely condemned the incident on the micro-blogging site Twitter and said: “Attack on journalists in Uttar Pradesh is condemnable. An independent probe into the incident should be carried out.”

Meanwhile, there is a surge of protest on social media against the attack on journalist Malini Subramaniam’s house in Bastar. Subramaniam who writes for a website has alleged that her house was stoned on Sunday evening by a group of Samajik Ekta Manch activists, who also asked her to leave Bastar.
