The claim has been made by the CBI's prime witness in the 2G spectrum case and Raja's former additional private secretary, Aseervatham Achary, in his statement which was recorded before a magistrate under section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

The CBI alleged that Kalaignar TV received a Rs 200-crore kickback from a front company of Shahid Usman Balwa, one of the key accused in the case.

The CBI also claims that the Radia tapes that were scrutinised by CBI sleuths indicate that Kanimozhi, a Rajya Sabha MP, was interested that Raja be retained as Union Telecom Minister and this formed one of the main grounds for her being named in the chargesheet.
