Additional DGP K. Rajendera said Alam, the man behind the 'protest' calendars, was arrested in the Telbal area on the outskirts of the city on Monday.

“He was responsible for a lot of violence and our major concern was to bring down the violence,'' Rajendra said.

Coming after the arrest of separatist Asiya Andrabi, leader of the Dukhtaran-e-Millat on August 28, Alam's arrest will be seen as a setback for hardline separatists.

A former militant commander, Alam, who is about 40 years old, came into the limelight during the 2008 Amarnath land row and was in custody for 21 months.
