Asian Games Champions South Korea stunned hot favourites Holland 3-2 in their first match here at the 11th World Cup being played at Monchengladbach.
Holland, the Champions Trophy holders, were looking for a winning start but were shocked into submission by a fitter and faster Korean side.
Korea surprised the Dutch in the 13th minute when Hyo Sik You latched onto a cross from the right to beat Dutch goalkeeper Guus Vogels.
Three minutes later, even as the Dutch were trying to gain a foothold, Korea struck the second goal. Sik You was in perfect position to trap and move along the left flank to ensure that his reverse shot entered the Dutch goal.
At the break, Korea led 2-0.
The Dutch came out firing with Teun de Nooijer swiftly moving into position to help the midfield with crosses into the Korean striking circle.
In the 48th minute, Nooijer moved through the middle and found Ronald Brouwer whose shot beat the Korean goalkeeper(1-2).
Five minutes later the Dutch found the equalizer when Taeke Taekema flicked in perfectly to score off a penalty corner.
At 2-2, it was anybody's game.
But the Koreans who were more agile ran down every ball in the midfield and on the flanks. It was a free hit in the 59th minute that gave Korea the match-winner.
Yong Bae Kim unleashed a strong shot that saw Jong Ho Seo deflect it brilliantly past the Dutch goalkeeper.
The Dutch tried desperately but the Koreans held them off to start their World Cup campaign with a bang and three points.
