Former Kanpur University Teachers’ Association (KUTA) general secretary MP Singh said that recently, it was unanimously decided by the All India Federation Of Universities and College Teachers Association (AIFUCTA) that a sit-in programme would be organised at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on May 22 to press the Union HRD Minister Arjun Singh to consider the promotion issue without delay.

Consequently, hundreds of degree college teachers got their seats reserved in trains to reach Delhi. However, a day before the teachers were informed that the sit-in programme was suspended following an assurance given by the Prime Minister to the delegation of teachers.

Dr Singh said that about 840 readers in the colleges affiliated to Chatrapati Shahuji Maharaj University were being denied promotion. He said it is strange that no teachers’ organisation sincerely fought for the cause of degree college teachers for the past several years.

He warned that if the issue was not resolved soon, teachers might resort to an agitation from July.
