Setting in motion the process of disqualification of former Bihar chief minister and Lok Sabha member Lalu Yadav and Rajya Sabha member Rasheed Masood, the CBI has formally informed the secretariats of both the houses about their conviction and sentencing in cases prosecuted by the agency. “It is a formal communication from the agency informing the presiding officers of both the houses about Lalu and Masood,” said a senior CBI official requesting anonymity.
A similar communication for another Lok Sabha member Jagdish Sharma was underway as he has also been convicted and sentenced for four years along with Lalu in one of the fodder scam cases.
Masood was held guilty of fraudulently nominating undeserving candidates to MBBS seats allotted to Tripura in medical colleges across the country in 1990 by a Delhi court. The case was investigated by the CBI.
The Election Commission has already indicated that it is not going to hold a bye-election to fill the vacancies arising out of disqualification of Lalu and. But since Masood is Rajya Sabha member, his case may necessitate a bye-election.
