Landslides close Jammu-Srinagar highway

Heavy downpour triggered landslides in the Ramban sector of Jammu-Srinagar highway on Saturday, leading to the closure of the road for vehicular traffic. Traffic officials said night long rain triggered landslides in Ramban sector, 150 km from winter capital Jammu, on Saturday.

Traffic officials said night long rain triggered landslides in Ramban sector, 150 km from winter capital Jammu, on Saturday.

Traffic on the highway has been suspended because of landslides at some places in Ramban sector of Jammu-Srinagar highway. Men and machines have been moved out by the border roads organization to clear the highway.

Intending passengers are advised to contact the traffic control rooms in Jammu and Srinagar before undertaking the journey, a traffic official added.

The over 300-km long Jammu-Srinagar highway is the only surface link of the landlocked Valley with the rest of the country. The railways have started a service between the north Kashmir's Baramulla town and the Bannihal town in the Jammu region.

The rail link between the Valley and the rest of the country is yet to become functional because it is still being laid between Udhampur and Bannihal towns in Jammu region.

All supplies of essential goods are brought into the Valley through the Jammu-Srinagar highway.
