Landslides kill at least 11 people in Sri Lanka

Officials are trying to evacuate some 1,000 people in a school isolated by the landslide in central Nuwara Eliya.

At least 11 people were killed in landslides in the tea growing region of central Sri Lanka on Friday, officials said.

"There are many places where there have been landslides and we have received information that 11 people have died," said DPG Kumarasiri, a senior bureaucrat in central Nuwara Eliya district, 180 kilometres east of capital, Colombo.

He said access has been cut off in some areas and officials are trying to evacuate some 1,000 people in a school isolated by the landslide.
