Lathicharge on Karnataka farmers: Dy.Comm, SP transferred

Conceding the demand of Chamrajnagar District farmers who were lathicharged by police recently during a protest, Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa on Thursday ordered transfer of the Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of police.

Conceding the demand of Chamrajnagar District farmers who were lathicharged by police recently during a protest, Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa on Thursday ordered transfer of the Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of police.

Both the top officials of Chamarajanagar District will be transferred with immediate effect, Yeddyurappa informed the state Assembly making a suo moto statement.

He also accepted the demand for withdrawal of cases against farmers and their organisations filed in connection with the stir earliler this month to press their charter of demands, including higher support price for sugarcane.

Yeddyurappa, who drove to Bidadi, about 35 kms away from Bangalore, to meet the farmers on a "padayatra" from Chamarajanagar to the city to call on him to present their demands, said the government would appeal to the Railways to withdraw cases against farmers for staging dharna in railway stations.

Promising a slew of sops, Yeddyurappa said the government would soon formulate a policy to provide Rs one lakh compensation to farmers who die of snake bite, drowning and natural calamities.

A scheme would be formulated in the next budget to bear the maternity expenditure of poor rural women and also towards formation of a development board for neera, a coconut brew.

Yeddyurappa also said he had invited a delegation of farmers for talks on December 26.

Under fire from opposition parties for the police action on farmers, Yeddyurappa had yesterday declared a ban on lathicharge on farmers."In future there will be no lathicharge on farmers", he had told the assembly.
