“I am happy that I played well and the 50 is a booster… every match is important and I try to play well,” he told Hindustan Times after South Zone’s victory over West Zone on Sunday.

He said that it was difficult to play strokes on this pitch as it was spinner friendly but was happy that Anil (Kumble) too bowled well after injury. “The juniors were lucky to play along with him and they learnt a lot from him; he bowled brilliantly and took advantage of spinning track to capture eight wickets in the match,” he said.

When asked about the standard of wicket keeping, he said it was difficult to keep the wickets on this type of pitch but for international players they had to adjust and keep well.

Regarding Balaji, Laxman said that he had a stiff back but it was not a cause for worry as they have some time before the second match. Balaji should be fit by then, he said. He also lauded Sreesanth who bowled brilliantly after coming from a toe injury.
