LINGOWISE: Check your spell checker

Even if you use the spell checker you must still have a good idea of the spelling of the word that you want to use.

So we know that we should be very careful while running spell checks on our PCs. Suggestions offered by the spell checkers for words it thinks are wrongly spelt can land us in serious trouble (remember the spell checker’s suggestion for Vajpayee?). Spell checkers do not always help.

Sometimes, if the spelling is incorrect the spell checker offers suggestions which may mean just the opposite. For example, if you write expresso (instead of espresso), the spell-checker is likely to throw up express and not espresso.

Similarly, for a lot it may suggest allot instead of a lot; suprised may become surpassed instead of surprised. But the most irritating moments are when the spell checker auto corrects words which it thinks are misspelt.

Here are some words which we should be careful about while running the spell check. Since all these words are spelled correctly, spell checkers don’t flag them it's and its; your and you're; loose and lose; compliment and complement; principal and principle; except and accept; affect and effect; assure, insure and ensure; moot and mute; from and form; their and there; desperate and disparate; diffuse and defuse... Checkers have their limits.

Even if you are using the spell checker you must still have a good idea of the spelling of the word that you want to use. If you are not sure, check the definition in the dictionary. But, a spell checker is good at catching and correcting typographical errors. For instance every time you misspell the, it will auto correct it. Ditto for and.
