The department has been selected for five years. The total financial assistance comes to around Rs 1 crore, which includes Rs 57 lakh as non-recurring and Rs 35.7 as recurring amount. “Getting CAS status is a big achievement. It is a recognition of the research work being done. So far only Chandigarh University and Sagar University were awarded this status. But later UGC stripped Sagar University of this status as their performance was not very satisfactory. It’s a big challenge,” said Geology Department head Prof MP Singh.
LU too has been asked by the UGC to give autonomy to this department for academic, financial and administrative matter relating to SAP, he said. Deputy coordinator for CAS programme Prof AR Bhattacharya said: “The programme will be effective from April 1, 2006 to March 31, 2011.”
