Major rivers in east UP on the rise

Water level in major rivers of eastern Uttar Pradesh, including the Rapti and Ghaghra, is rising due to heavy rains in catchment areas and the flow in many of them is hovering around the danger mark, according to the Central Water Commission.

The river Rapti is flowing at 72.0 metre, which is four metres below the danger mark. The river Ghaghra is also rising, CWC said.

This has been worrying people who have faced the wrath of these rivers during the 1998 floods, they said.

According to sources, the Rapti's level rose about 3.5 metres in last 3-4 days. The rise in water level of Ghaghra and heavy rain in hill areas of adjacent Nepal led to rise in various rivers, they said.

Heavy rain was recorded this week in Basti and Gorakhpur divisions resulting in the rise of water level in Ghaghra, Rohini, Rapti, and Burhi Rapti rivers.

Occasional rain was recorded today in these two divisions.

Ongoing work on strengthning of the embankments has also suffered a setback due to the rains, the officials said. The state government has ordered work on the embankment to be completed by June 15.

Train derails near Shahjahanpur
An engine and three coaches of a goods train derailed in Shahjahanpur district of Uttar Pradesh this morning, affecting rail traffic.

Railway sources said the engine and three coaches of the train derailed on a bridge over river Garra under the Moradabad railway division. Two of the coaches turned turtle, fracturing the railway track.
