Maldives decides to open diplomatic mission in India

The Maldives on Wednesday decided to open a resident mission in New Delhi as part of an exercise to increase the country's diplomatic representation abroad.

The Maldives on Wednesday decided to open a resident mission in New Delhi as part of an exercise to increase the country's diplomatic representation abroad.

Maldives Foreign Minister Fathulla Jameel on Wednesday conveyed the decision to India's External Affairs Minister K. Natwar Singh.

"The Maldives had been considering expanding its diplomatic representation abroad and decided to give priority to opening a High Commission in New Delhi at the earliest," an external affairs ministry statement said.

India and the Maldives, both members of SAARC, share traditionally close and friendly relations.
