Venkat Raju had a love affair with the daughter of a Telugu film producer, for whom he worked as a driver, and eloped with her two months ago to Jamshedpur.
A state police team had brought the couple back a few days ago after which the girl was sent to her parents' Banjara Hills residence, police said.
Unable to bear the separation, he poured kerosene on himself at the producer's residence last night and then hugged his lover.
"I have decided to end my life unable to bear the separation," he said.
While the man sustained 40 per cent burns and was admitted to the Osmania General Hospital, the girl escaped with minor injuries.
Raju claimed that he feared for the lives of his parents from the producer.
The Banjara Hills police registered a case of attempt to murder against him.
