A man attempted to set himself on fire near the venue of the Independence Day function in Bhubaneswar on Tuesday, in protest against the alleged delay in getting income tax refund from the government.

Dutikrushna Sahu (42), who was among the spectators at the Mahatma Gandhi marg, suddenly pulled out a bottle of liquid and poured it on his clothes, police said.

As some people raised an alarm, police rushed there and whisked him away before he could light a match, they said. He was detained and was being interrogated.

The man, who belongs to Dudurkote village of Dhenkanal district, told the police during interrogation that he was to get a sum of over Rs 53,000 from the government towards income tax refund which was not being paid to him, police said. He was trying to kill himself in protest against the delay in payment of the money to him.
