University Vice Chancellor N Bijoy Singh and Registrar RK Ranjan, kidnapped from Canchipur area near Imphal on December 13, were admitted to Regional Institute Of Medical Science Hospital at around 1 AM with bullet wounds on the left leg, they said.

Singh and Ranjan are out of danger, they added.

Meanwhile, Kanglei Yawol Kannlup militant outfit claimed responsibility for the abduction, saying the act was done as Singh and Ranjan had not followed rules in appointment of the Director of Audio Visual Research Centre.

A person, claiming to be KYKL spokesman, informed local media organisations, the officials were "punished" as part of the outfit's 'Operation Kangleipak' which aimed at "cleansing" the educational system.

The University officials and students have called off their "ceasework" agitation following release of Singh and Ranjan.
