Manmohan is Indian of the Year

The Prime Minister, who is chosen CNN IBN Indian of the Year 2006, also gets best politician award for the last year.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was on Tuesday chosen CNN IBN Indian of the Year 2006 for his all round performance. Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee gave the award to his media advisor Sanjay Baru at a glittering function on Tuesday. Singh also received the best politician award for the year 2006.

The awards, constituted in partnership with Hindustan Times, had steel tycoon LN Mittal as recipient of the Special Jury Award for being an entrepreneur who showed the world how an Indian would build a multi-billion dollar empire.

Indira Nooyi, Pepsi Co chairperson, got the best NRI of the year award whereas Ratan Tata bagged the award in the business category.

Others, who received the awards were Jeev Milkha Singh in sports, Rajkumar Hirani in entertainment and Arvind Kejriwal for public service.
