Former Lok Sabha Speaker Manohar Joshi on Monday filed nomination papers for the biennial Rajya Sabha elections.
Joshi, a senior Shiv Sena leader and former Maharashtra Chief Minister, was accompanied by leader of opposition in state assembly Ramdas Kadam when he filed papers at Vidhan Bhawan.
The last date for filing nominations is March 17 and polls, if necessary, would be held on March 28.
Sena has 58 members in the assembly and a minimum 42 MLAs are needed to ensure a win for Joshi.
Joshi said he was confident of his victory.
There are a total of six Rajya Sabha seats for which elections are being held from Maharashtra.
Joshi said if all political parties fielded candidates as per their strength in the house, all the nominees would be elected unopposed.
Senior Sena leader Subhash Desai and Sena MLA Bala Nandgaonkar, against whom Sena chief Bal Thackeray had launched an attack for his `siding' with Raj Thackeray, were also present when Joshi filed the papers.
