Winner of five world championships, Mary Kom, is the only one of the eight-member Indian boxing squad to win a medal here. She was the lone Indian woman boxer to make it to London on its debut at the Games.

“Mary Kom did the country proud by winning a medal at the world highest sporting arena and thus was the best and most appropriate choice of flag bearer for the closing ceremony,” said an IOA official. In Beijing 2008, boxer Vijender Singh, who had won bronze, was the closing ceremony flag bearer.

The other Indian medalists at the London Games, Vijay Kumar (silver), Gagan Narang (bronze) and Saina Nehwal (bronze) went back home after their events. In the opening ceremony, Sushil Kumar had led the contingent.
