Although the Mayor met Vajpayee it could not be ascertained until the time of going to press whether he had accepted the invitation. Dr Sharma, who was accompanied by Dr Santosh Sharma, also met several senior BJP leaders during the visit.

The Indore Municipal Corporation had initially decided to have the Manikbag overbridge and phase II of the Bond Road Scheme inaugurated by Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan while inviting Vajpayee for kickstarting the eponymous sports facility.

Chauhan had, in principle, accepted the invite, and informed the Mayor that he would visit the City around January 20 for the inauguration.

The question now arises as to what prompted the IMC to change its mind. Attempts to contact Dr Sharma to ascertain the reason elicited no response.

Meanwhile, the quest for a suitable inaugurator has kept the Manikbag overbridge, which is almost complete, closed, a fact that has aroused public ire.

The overbridge, which was opened to the public for one day on January 1, is expected to significantly cut down travel time between the eastern and western parts of the City.
