The protests are being held to send a message to President Gayoom that police brutality, political prisoners and opposition civil servants being shunted out of senior posts are issues that need to be taken seriously by the Govt.

The MDP has even established committees to ensure that demonstrations take place in full swing following afternoon prayers in the country, the Minivan News reported on Tuesday.

Ahmed Abbas of Male' demonstration security committee told MinivanNews that the committee is capable of getting around any attempts at obstructing the demonstration by the government.

The Ministry of Home Affairs issued a warning on Monday asking people to stay away from the demonstrations. A press statement by the ministry said that the demonstrations planned by the party are not permitted by the Constitution.
