A medicos group on Sunday opposed the agitation against the proposed quota hike and asked the medical community to speak against privatisation of higher education instead, which marginalised the weaker sections of the society.

"Medical students have once again fallen prey to the acts of commission and omission both on part of the central government and other vested political interests to divide them along caste lines thus dissipating their ability to fight for their democratic demands," the 'Medicos Forum for Equal Opportunities' said in a statement.

Reservation was helpful for students from the oppressed castes for having access to higher education, however, the Forum said it, in no way, directed against the meritorious among the upper castes.

"It is a matter of great concern that vested political interests are seeking to misdirect the students as is obvious by the fact that bodies of private practitioners like the IMA are seeking to usurp a leading role in the agitation in the name of safeguarding so called merit," it alleged.

The forum asked agitating students to shelve the divisive slogans of "caste chauvinism" and build a broader unity for progressive demands like opposing the privatisation of higher education.
