Medicos to go on fast unto death
STEPPING UP the 15-day-long anti-reservation campaign, the undergraduate and postgraduate medical students of Banaras Hindu University have decided to go on ?fast unto death? from Thursday. On the other hand, the faculty members of the Institute of Medical Sciences (IMS-BHU) under the banner of Association of Teachers of Modern Medicine today extended their support to striking medicos and decided to observe a one-day token strike on Wednesday (May 31).
STEPPING UP the 15-day-long anti-reservation campaign, the undergraduate and postgraduate medical students of Banaras Hindu University have decided to go on ‘fast unto death’ from Thursday.
On the other hand, the faculty members of the Institute of Medical Sciences (IMS-BHU) under the banner of Association of Teachers of Modern Medicine today extended their support to striking medicos and decided to observe a one-day token strike on Wednesday (May 31).
Office-bearers and members of the Association held a general body meeting on Tuesday and decided to go on a one-day mass leave to show their solidarity with the striking medicos across the country.
“It was decided unanimously that we would go on a one-day mass leave on Wednesday against the reservation policy of the Union Government and show our solidarity with the medical students,” said Dr SK Gupta, a member of the Association.
The infuriated medical students have decided to step up their anti-reservation stir and observe fast-unto-death from Thursday. “We have decided to observe ‘fast unto death’ to register our protest against the wrong policies of the Union Government from Thursday,” Dr Mahesh P Kate, general secretary of the Resident Doctors’ Association (RDA) told Hindustan Times here on Tuesday.
Apart from this, the students of IMS-BHU also intensified their ongoing anti-reservation protest agitation with a total of 1- medicos going on a 48-hour relay hunger strike here on Tuesday.
The 10 undergraduate and postgraduate students including Dr Aditya Gupta, Dr Manav Agrawal, Dr Dinesh Mishra, Dr Sunny Garg, Dr Nitin Sharma, Dr Atul Bhardwaj, Dr Priya Tiwari, Dr Swati Gupta, Dr Shraddha Goel and Dr Punam Singh went on a 48-hour relay hunger strike on Tuesday morning.
A group of four doctors of IMS-BHU including Dr Rohit Tiwari, Dr Nandini, Dr Vaibhav and Dr Sanjeev departed for New Delhi on Tuesday to meet President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam and extend their support to striking medicos there.
Members of Sant Ravidas Shiksha Evam Vikas Sansthan, Creation India Society and other social organisations took out a symbolic funeral procession of Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and Union Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh to lodge their protest against quota policy of the Union government here in Varanasi this evening.
Traders of rath yatra, Bhelupura and Kamachcha took out a bike rally against the policy. The anti-reservation agitation of medical students entered its sixteenth day today. Medical services at Sir Sunderlal Hospital in BHU remained affected.
