LUCKNOW POLICE are now banking on gangster KD Singh to pave the way for the arrest of the two youths who had opened fire on UP Congress Committee member Luv Bhargava’s wife Mehar Bhargava on February 28.
Singh is close to a don-turned-MLA from eastern UP who is supporting the government.
Mehar was shot at after she objected to lewd remarks made at her daughter-in-law by two drunken youths. She suffered bullet injuries on her throat and is now battling for life in a Delhi hospital.
The assailants were identified as aides of gangster KD Singh who lives in the Dilip Pur Tower building where the shootout took place.
In a bid to pacify Congressmen, police had arrested KD Singh’s flat attendant the very next day. This attendant, however, had been nowhere near the scene of crime.
The real accused are yet to be traced.
However, police sources said investigators had gone to the gangster’s native place in Jaunpur district two days ago. Singh was elected block pramukh in recent elections.
The police team found clinching evidence that the assailants had made a call to their boss (KD Singh) soon after committing the crime.
The police had put Singh’s mobile phones under surveillance the same night after they came to know that the accused were staying at his flat. Police interrogated KD Singh and he admitted that the two accused Sachin Pahari and Amit Singh used to stay with him. Police ‘requested’ Singh to help them in tracing the duo, as top cops were exerting pressure on them.
The police even contacted Singh’s mentor, an influential MLA, to ask the gangster to hand over Sachin and Amit to them.
Though Singh assured the police that he would produce the accused in the police station, he did not mention when this would happen.
