Speaking as the chief guest at a programme organised to highlight the significance of forests and trees in daily life at BRD Medical College, Yadav expressed concern over mindless deforestation in various parts of the State and said the forest cover had reduced alarmingly.

Yadav called upon the people to participate in the drive to give a healthy atmosphere and environment to their future generation.

Delivering his views on this occasion, forest officer Mukesh Kumar said in Gorakhpur district there was a target for plantation of 28.65 lakh plants and this target could be achieved only with the participation of common people. He said around 2000 plants would be planted on the medical college premises by July 7.

He further said various seminars, corner plays and drawing competitions would be organised during the one-week Van Mahotsava.

Prof Onkar Nath Tripathi presented a glooming figure of future if the present trend of chopping down trees continued. He quoted various religious books in which the importance of trees had been highlighted.

Hundreds of children also participated in the tree plantation drive.
