An earthquake rattled the city of Hong Kong on Thursday causing skyscrapers to shake and sending people running into the streets in rural areas, residents said.

The Hong Kong Observatory said it had recorded a tremor but it did not give details. China's State Seismological Bureau in Beijing said a "small" earthquake occurred in the waters off the Chinese territory.

Police said there were no initial reports of injuries or casualties.
