Moderate intensity quake hits off Andaman island

A moderate intensity earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter Scale hit off the coast of North Andaman island on Tuesday but the Meteorological Department said there was no threat of a tsunami.

A moderate intensity earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter Scale hit off the coast of North Andaman island on Tuesday but the Meteorological Department said there was no threat of a tsunami.

The earthquake struck at 12.37pm at a depth of 35km off the coast of North Andaman island, director general of India Meteorological Department (IMD) LS Rathore said, adding it was of moderate intensity.

He said there was no threat of tsunami.

The Indian Ocean and the Andaman Sea is prone to earthquakes and often records tremors.
