The consul general of Bahrain in Mumbai, Mohammed Abdulaziz Al Khaja, who was embroiled in a controversy after a molestation case was registered against him two weeks ago, returned to Bahrain on Friday night.
Chief protocol officer – Tourism and Cultural affairs (additional charge), Maharashtra, Sumit Mallik confirmed that the diplomat left the country. “He [Al Khaja] was “recalled” by the government of Bahrain and has left the country last night.” When asked if the complaints against him were the reason behind his recall, Mallik said, “While they do not have to give us a reason about why they are recalling him, it seems logical that it happened following the complaints.”
The Bahrain embassy in India however tweeted ‘The transfer of Moh’d A.aziz Al Khaja (Consul General of Bahrain in Mumbai) to MOFA in Bahrain is due to the end of his term.”
A case was filed against Al Khaja at the Malabar Hill police station on December 13. The FIR was registered after a woman, manager of the housing society where the diplomat lived, approached the police on December 9.
According to her statement, he ransacked the office, used abusive language and even touched her inappropriately, following which she called the building security guards.
The senior inspector of Malabar Hill police station referred the matter to senior officials since a diplomat was involved. The senior officers after going through the facts allowed the local police station to register an FIR under sections 354 (molestation), 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) and 504 (Intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The police did not arrest him on account of diplomatic immunity.
