There are several others in Karari and other areas of the district having links with the don and his cohorts, said DIG (Range) Akhilesh Mehrotra while talking to HT.

The DIG said that one such man has business interests in many places outside the district. Moreover, this man has got himself photographed with Dawood long time back, the DIG informed.

The sources added that despite being in the know, the police have not been able to initiate any action against this person who enjoys considerable clout in the society, said another senior officer, speaking on condition of anonymity.

However, cops are keeping a close watch on this man whose has amassed a lot of wealth over the years.

A security agency was handling the case in which a probe was also on, informed the DIG.

“There are others under our surveillance. They will be nabbed the day we get clues of their shady activities,” he added.

Resident of Sihori village, Tausif had demanded Rs 20 lakh from the accountant of Larsen and Tubro.

Upon refusal, a caller who identified himself as Chhota Shakeel threatened the accountant.

The company made a complaint to the police following which an attempt to nab Tausif was made but he managed to escape after abandoning his mobike.

However, police nabbed him yesterday when he was about to board a Mumbai-bound train. Upon interrogation, he told the police that it was one Noor and not Chhota Shakeel who had issued the threatening call from Dubai to the accountant.

Tausif who had moved to Mumbai about a decade back along with his father and other members of the family, was arrested there in a murder case wherein three others including Chhota Shakeel were also named.

After spending about three years in jail, he came back to his village.

In jail, he had contacted Noor who later moved to Dubai.

Meanwhile, the cops were trying to unearth possible links between Noor and Chhota Shakeel.
