THE URBAN local bodies poll process in Kanpur city is under a cloud.

A Samajwadi Party MP has expressed reservations about the fairness of the poll process in the city. The MP, seeking its intervention in the matter, has written a letter to the State Election Commission (SEC)on October 2.

Giving reasons for his suspicion, the MP has blamed district magistrate Anurag Srivastava for deploying the Kanpur Development Authority (KDA) employees in the election.

About one thousand KDA employees have been put on election duty.

Corroborating the fact, a senior official of the KDA, seeking anonymity, said that since the development authorities are a part of the local bodies, they are not involved in local bodies election duty as a convention.

He also admitted that no other such incident had been reported from any other place. “Why it has been done in the city goes beyond a common man’s understanding,” he said.

Taking note of the same, the SP MP further wrote in his letter that since four corporators of the municipal corporation (MC) are members of the KDA’s board committee and the MC employees work in tandem with the KDA, it would be wrong to expect a fair poll from the KDA staff.

The fact that the letter has been written by a ruling party MP makes the development all the more significant.

The MP has also stated in the letter that several other people’s representatives too have expressed similar fears.

The MP has requested the SEC to immediately intervene in the matter and direct the Kanpur city district magistrate to cancel the duty of the KDA employees.

Srivastava could not be reached for his comment. However, ADM (city) Abrar Ahmed said that a reply would be sent to the SEC.
