A hush-hush search is on for all suspicious people here who have links with those in Mumbai. Be it the murder of T-series owner Gulshan Kumar, the serial bomb explosions in 1993, the blasts on the Sabarmati Express in Faizabad or the one on the Shranjeevi Express in Shahganj — all those allegedly involved in these incidents had links with Jaunpur and Azamgarh.
After explosions in Mumbai on August 25, 2003, the Mumbai police had taken many people of Purvanchal into custody and grilled them. Interrogation revealed that the kingpin Hameed was a resident of Azamgarh. His henchmen had links in Jaunpur, Ghazipur, Shahganj and Badlapur, besides Azamgarh.
Don Abu Salem, resident of Saraimir in Azamgarh, was a key figure in the Mumbai blasts of 1993. Some people of Purvanchal were alleged to be involved in the murder of cassette king Gulshan Kumar in 1997. Again, there were apprehensions about the involvement of people of eastern UP in a bomb explosion on Sabarmati Express at Faizabad railway station on August 14, 2000.
A team of the Intelligence sleuths, which had then come here from Delhi, collected details of outgoing and incoming calls from telephone exchanges at Shahganj and Kheta Sarai in Jaunpur.
