Arya Bhavan stands out from the existing Udipi restaurants. The proprietor, Muthuswamy is a name that has become synonymous with authentic South Indian cuisine.

Known as the Idli King of Mumbai, Muthuswamy set up his catering unit 62 years ago and went on to build up a reputation for traditional South Indian food catering with an authentic taste. His client list includes celebrities comprising a host of Bollywood stars — Salman Khan, Madhuri Dixit, Jackie Shroff and Sridevi, to name a few, and industrialists too.
Now, he’s started his first eatery, Arya Bhavan, at Matunga Central (opposite the railway station). Surprising, but this eatery has replaced Relax, an extremely popular eatery in the area.

In keeping with his impressive clientele, Arya Bhavan spells class, specially by Udipi standards. Food is served on a banana leaf laid on a sparkling white plate.

Unlike other Udipi joints, sambhar is served in huge bowls. One can dunk idlis and vadas in sambhar or rasam and add to the fun of eating. Milk Uppuma is yummy but slightly greasy. Everything on the menu is awesome but do end the meal with Pineapple Sheera (not on the menu) followed by strong filter coffee. The most expensive item on the menu is Onion Mysore, an onion dosa with red masala inside. The cheapest is steamed idli and Medhu Vada at Rs 20. A must-visit restaurant for a taste of traditional South Indian cuisine at reasonable prices in a contemporary set-up.
