The last king of the Holkar dynasty, Maharaja Yashwantrao (1908-1961), is credited with the construction of the imposing seven-storeyed hospital, the biggest government-run hospital in Madhya Pradesh.

The statue of the erstwhile ruler on the hospital premises was garlanded in a small function organised jointly by Lok Sanskriti Manch and the Hospital authorities and attended by the staff. Among those who attended the function were IMC Chairman Shankar Lalwani, MLA Mahendra Hardia, Padmashri Shalinitai Moghe, Akhil Bharatiya Holkar Association’s Kashinathrao Holkar and other prominent persons associated with various social organisations.

Speaking on the occasion, Lalwani said, “Maharaja Holkar contributed in a huge way to give Indore city the modern edge. It was his futuristic vision that we today have in the City important assets like MY Hospital, Devi Ahilya Vishwa Vidyalaya, Holkar College, Yashwant Hall and Yashwant Sagar Lake etc.”

MYH completes 50 years on October 23, and a committee would be formed to plan celebrations for the golden jubilee year, Lalwani announced.

Dr Vinod Naneria told the gathering about a website () developed by him on the life and works of Maharaja Yashwant. MY Superintendent Dr D K Jain said, “We had been observing Maharaja’s birth anniversary earlier also.

But it was only after Health Minister Ajai Vishnoi pointed out recently that we decided to hold a bigger function.”
As part of the preparation, the statue was cleaned and re-painted, the small garden surrounding it was trimmed and mended properly and even the water in the fountain was cleaned. Dr Deepak Fanase conducted the programme and Mudra Shastri proposed the vote of thanks.
