The apartment is in the name of a Samajwadi Party (SP) leader. According to KM Rai, who lived with Shailendra and has been detained by the police, the incident took place when some people were cleaning a gun and Shailendra said that he was very good at cleaning guns.

Rai added that Shailendra suddenly put the gun on his temple and said that people were unnecessary afraid of a firearm. It was during this, Rai said, that Shailendra got hit and died on the spot. He also claimed that Shailendra’s death was by accident. However, the cops were still waiting Shailendra’s family members to arrive. “So far, it looks like a case of mishap, but you never know,” a cop said.
