According to a communiqué issued by the state government the ban comes into force with immediate effect and will continue till further order.

The ban has been imposed in the greater interest of the public health, as pigs were the carriers of the dreaded disease, which spread through mosquitoes from pigs to humans, the statement said.

There were also reports of several deaths of pigs.

Pork is popular dish among Nagas and most of the pigs were being brought, especially from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.

The state government has ordered the police to keep strict vigil at all entry points and check gates so that no pig or its by-products could be smuggled in.
