"Kawnai is believed to be the first place where Kumbh Mela was held since ages. However, after a dispute between various akhadas during the Peshwa regime, it was later shifted to Nashik and Trimbakeshwar in year 1700," according to Mahant Phalhari Baba of Kapildhara Kawnai town.

The mahants and sadhus will take the snan (bath) on the Parvani day, an auspicious day, at Kawnai which is surrounded by hills from all sides.

Maharashtra government has spent lakhs of rupees to develop the place considering its importance and basic amenities were being provided, official sources said in Nashik.
