(couplets) and some of his compositions for films.

"Once he recited a sher that went - Yeh dil baar baar toot ta hai, banta nahin (this heart breaks down often, it does not heal)," Dev Pahlajani, head of the cardiology department at Nanavati Hospital and one of the doctors who treated Naushad, told PTI.

"He was a very jovial man. The next time I hear his songs, I shall always remember his last days with us in the hospital," he said.

Naushad suffered a cardiac arrest at 9.15 am today at the hospital, where he was admitted a week ago, Pahlajani said.

"He had undergone a bypass surgery 20 years ago and also four angioplasties, one of them prior to the bypass surgery," he said.

Along with the cardiac problem, Naushad had of late been suffering from a minor kidney ailment, he said.
