The newly elected legislators of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are meeting on Saturday to elect their leaders. They will also collectively elect Patnaik as their leader.
After that, Patnaik will meet Governor MM Rajendran to stake his claim to forming the next government.
The BJP's national leadership has already deputed party general secretary Pramod Mohajan to the meeting.
In the last government, the BJP had nine ministers but this time it may have fewer, alliance sources said. Patnaik may also include more young faces.
The BJD-BJP alliance has won 93 of the state's 147 seats in assembly elections against the 106 they bagged four years ago.
