Sidhu's candidature has already got the backing of Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal), they said.

He has already resigned from his State Bank of Patiala job, though his resignation was yet to be accepted, the sources said.

However, senior bank officials in Chandigarh said Sidhu has only sent in a request seeking permission to join a political party, as stipulated in the service rules, and the same was being considered as it was the first of its kind.

Sidhu, however, would have to put in his papers if he planned to contest a Parliamentary or Lok Sabha election, they said.

Amritsar is a pre-dominantly Hindu seat and earlier reports had even suggested that Law Minister Arun Jaitley could be fielded from the constituency.

Besides Amritsar, the party is yet to announce its candidates for the prestigious Chandni Chowk seat and five seats in Haryana.

After Union Minister Vijay Goel shifted his constituency to Delhi Sadar, the party is likely to field a "local candidate". Among those in the race for the ticket include former Delhi Mayor Shanti Desai.
