One can say that it is the mother of quiz shows. It was in 1972 that Bournvita Quiz Contest hit the waveswhen people did not evenhear of Kaun Banega Crorepati and other quiz shows. What started as a radio quiz programme, has today caught the eye of one and all, especially children with talent, since the last 12 years on TV.

Sanjay Purohit, Director, Sales & Marketing, Cadbury India Ltd gave an all round view of the popular quiz contest, “Way back in 1972, it started on Radio with Amin Sayani hosting the show. For a decade we covered only 4 cities and in the early 80s, it went off air. However, it was re-started as a stage show in 1993, which saw Derek O’Brien taking over as the host. The show made its debut on the small screen in 1994. It has been 12 years now and since 2001, it has tied up with Sony.”

With the advent of 2006 the channel, the sponsor and Derek decided it was time for a revamp. A new-look, BQC will, henceforth, premier on (Friday) February 24, at 7.30 pm, followed by Sunday February 26, at 10.30 am. Derek informed, “No more it will be just a quiz contest but also proven skill/talent will be taken into account to be a winner.

Derek O Brien and Shonal Rawat strike a pose for the revamped Bournvita Quiz Contest

The show will be bilingual now and has a lady co-host (smiles). The prize - a trip to the 7 wonders of the world with one of the parents- is being sponsored by Cadbury’s"

Over 90 finalists from across India will be competing for the prestigious prize for 26 weeks and be the proud Confidence Champion. Derek O’Brien was at his humorous best and disclosed, “Surprisingly, while short listing contestants from over a lakh entries, we found there were many talented youngsters, who have achieved great heights in various fields at such a young age.

Now this is something that one has to really look forward to. Also I have a very beautiful co-host in first runner-up Miss Asia Pacific Shonal Rawat, who will be talking in Hindi.” While children get glued to TV to gain more knowledge, the parents will be crossing their fingers for their child to be the BQC Confidence Champion!
