The infant’s last rites were performed at Bhangi village of Khataulli in Muzaffarnagar on Monday morning.

The police said they were yet to receive a complaint against the local Susheela Jaswantrai Maternity Hospital.

“We would initiate action against the hoIncubatorspital only after getting a complaint from the family,” Meerut Senior Superintendent of Poilce Raghuveer Lal said.

“We’re waiting for all family members to get together and take a decision on the issue,” Krishan Pal Singh, maternal grandfather of the child, said. The trust that runs the hospital had footed the bill for the treatment at Apollo, he said.

The mother, Kavita, is still ill and in the same maternity hospital. The baby is her second; the first one was “born dead” in the same hospital last year

The newborn was put in the incubator after he became unconscious soon after birth on Saturday. The incubator developed some snag and its tube blasted, resulting in the fire. The family has accused the staff of negligence.
