Major roads and vast areas in capital Dispur were submerged on Friday due to a flash flood which was triggered by almost five hours of incessant rains since Thursday night.
Nine people died due to the incident out of which four were killed in landslides, four were killed due to electrocution and a youth was drowned in Bharalu river.
Chief minister Tarun Gogoi visited some flood affected areas in the city to take stock of the situation. He also waded through knee-deep water in the MLA’s hostel to oversee the situation.
Huge down flow of waters from Meghalaya hills to southern areas in Guwahati city, massive encroachment in city hills, poor drainage system were identified as major causes for the situation.
“I will take up the issue of unsystematic hill cut in Meghalaya hills and heavy downfall of water from Meghalaya side to Guwahati with Meghalaya chief minister,” Gogoi said.
