Major powers have reached no agreement on a UN resolution to rein in Iran's controversial nuclear ambitions and will likely not have a text ready this week, a senior US official said early on Tuesday.

The official, who asked not to be named, made the comments after Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice met on Monday night with her counterparts from Russia, China, France, Britain, Germany and the European Union in an effort to reach common ground on Iran's suspected efforts to build nuclear weapons.

The official said there was no agreement on a US push for a resolution under Chapter Seven of the UN charter which authorises sanctions and even the use of force.

"I think the prospects for an agreement this week are not substantially good," the official said.
