A ‘strongly-worded letter’ was sent to the IOC by the sports ministry asking to remove the company linked to India’s worst industrial disaster, the Bhopal Tragedy, due to their purchasing of Union Carbide in 1999.
However, IOA acting-president VK Malhotra, said, “We will not boycott the Games but we will decide how to take part under protest.” He then added, “Why sports is being targeted when Dow has interests in other fields too? If that is the case, then Dow should not be allowed to sign any other deals within the country either.”
