Best-selling novel and controversial film The Da Vinci Code has inspired top pen maker Dante Del Vecchio to make a new $1,600 (£890) pen, which he is handing out to select celebrities at the Cannes Film Festival.

Visconti, who came up with the idea for the handcrafted pen after reading Dan Brown's book, felt Cannes would be the ideal place to launch it, reported Contactmusic.

The pens have a hidden numbered code that will help solve a riddle, which readers of the book will be familiar with.

Visconti said that the first person who cracks the code would be rewarded with a special prize.

Sharon Stone, Sir Elton John and Sofia Coppola are among the stars to have received the pens.
